<image:title>Natures Notebook - Cracking the Code: Exploring the Factors Behind Splitting Tomatoes - In the area of Kansas where I live, the USDA hardiness map considers it to be zone 6a, which means the average minimum winter temperature every year is between -9 °F and -4 °F. This map allows us to understand what plants are hardy and will grow well in our area, but because of climate change, the zones slowly shift on the map year by year, reclassifying areas into slightly different zones.</image:title>
<image:caption>This year's summer has been quite strange; we will have some hot days followed by bouts of on-and-off rain, and this pattern will cycle. Not only does this cause rapid changes for the plants, but it also creates a lot of humidity. Due to this weather cycle, my garden has encountered some interesting issues.</image:caption>

<image:title>Natures Notebook - Cracking the Code: Exploring the Factors Behind Splitting Tomatoes - One of the first things I found out was that there were two different types of cracking on tomatoes. The kind of crack that I had on my tomatoes, as pictured above, is called radial cracking and results in a vertical split down the tomato. This type of crack is detrimental because it goes down to the flesh of the fruit, which can leave it open to infection.</image:title>
    </image:image>

<image:title>Natures Notebook - Cracking the Code: Exploring the Factors Behind Splitting Tomatoes - The other is called concentric cracking, which is displayed as multiple cracks occurring in a circular pattern around the stem of the fruit. This type of cracking is not as bad because it doesn’t penetrate down to the flesh; it stays at the surface, which reduces the chance for disease. Radial splitting is the worst of the two because it can affect a larger area of the tomato, but both types can result in the fruit rotting on the vine if left to do so.</image:title>

<image:title>Natures Notebook - Kansas’ Feathered Gems: an In-Depth Look at the Hummingbird Species - It may be hard to see the hummingbird as it is fast and agile but this is exactly what their body is built to do. But even as fast as they go we need to know what they look like to be able to identify them. Right off the bat you may notice by looking at them that the males have a large iridescent red patch of feathers on their throat accompanied by a black mask while the female's throat is completely gray and she has no special face coloration. But as for the emerald green back and crown the male and female share these features.</image:title>

<image:caption>Ruby Throated hummingbirds or Archilocus colubris in Latin are one of the most common hummingbirds in the east side of Kansas and can be found from Canada to the gulf coast. Even though we might see Ruby Throated hummingbirds as quite rare here in Kansas they are 1 of over 300 + species of hummingbirds that fall into the Trochilidae family.</image:caption>

<image:title>Natures Notebook - Kansas’ Feathered Gems: an In-Depth Look at the Hummingbird Species - It is spring here in Kansas and as of April 25th, we have been seeing hummingbirds in our neck of the woods which means it's time to break out the feeders and enjoy the show. Through the following weeks, we should be seeing our avian friends fly back from the gulf coast, Panama, and even Mexico. They will return as small birds only to eat here in Kansas and get bigger all while fighting each other for resources along the way. Hummingbirds' abilities are quite amazing due to their well-engineered bodies, let's take a look at some of their niche adaptations, behaviors, and the journey they take.</image:title>

<image:title>Natures Notebook - Kansas’ Feathered Gems: an In-Depth Look at the Hummingbird Species - A hummingbird's journey is a cycle. In the spring they travel from places like the Gulf Coast, Mexico, and even Panama to come to Kansas for warmer temperatures and less competition for food. Then when winter hits in Kansas it gets too cold causing them to migrate back to where they came from in search of, once again, warmer temps and more food resources.</image:title>

      <image:title>Swedish Ivy - Plectranthus Verticillatus Care</image:title>
<image:caption>Most things with the name ivy are climbers and have holdfast that can cling to the wall to grow upwards but not this ivy. Swedish Ivy is not actually an ivy as it has a prostrate form. Not to say that Plectranthus isn’t interesting in itself. A specimen was collected on the coast of southern Africa in 1936 and went unidentified until 1974. Later on, it was naturalized in Australia, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii because it adapts easily to warm climates. Plectranthus is actually quite a large genus with about 85 plus species of plants. These plants can usually go outside in areas in zone 10 - 11 but can be a houseplant in all regions given the right environment. This plant is great for beginners seeing as it is low maintenance and a fast grower.</image:caption>

<image:title>Swedish Ivy - Plectranthus Verticillatus Care - Plectranthus is generally a low maintenance plant but can get out of hand if yo do not prune it regularly. Personally I do not prune mine because I like the large trailing hanging basket look but it can create issues. If the plant gets too large and heavy stems on the underneath or even the top can become weak from all the weight and snap off. Swedish Ivy doesn’t mind being semi root bound but when the roots start to come out of the bottom of the pot its time for an up pot.</image:title>
<image:caption>If you would like to prune your plant start by cutting off dead blooms, leggy growth, and unruly stems. Regular trimming can encourage your plant direct energy elsewhere in the plant to allow it to branch out and create healthier growth. Pruning is half based off how you want your plant to look and half based off the health of the plant but those can also go hand in hand.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Swedish Ivy - Plectranthus Verticillatus Care - Take Cuttings</image:title>
<image:caption>Take cuttings of the vines from your mother plant that are about 7 inches or longer with sterile and sharp scissors or pruners Though some may think taking cuttings from your plant is harming it removing growth will actually encourage new growth on your mother plant Cutting off stems allows the plant to redirect the energy it was using to grow those stems into growing the other stems on the plant longer and lusher You can take cuttings any time of the year but will have the best luck in spring or summer in its active growing season</image:caption>

<image:title>Swedish Ivy - Plectranthus Verticillatus Care - Remove Foliage and Put In Water</image:title>
<image:caption>Remove bottom leaves about 1 or 2 inches up from the bottom to show a bare stem and leave the rest of the foliage. Put the stem in a cup or bottle of clean water and place the cup or bottle in a spot with bright indirect light. Wait for a week until roots form from anywhere it has root nodules Since Swedish Ivy is a fast grower it shouldn’t take more than 36 hours before roots start to form It is recommended that you use a clear cup or bottle in order to keep an eye on the roots</image:caption>

<image:caption>Make sure to change the water weekly or when it starts to look dirty to encourage healthy and quick root growth Once you see roots you can plant your cutting in soil when the roots reach 1 to 2 inches or whatever your desired root length is Cuttings can stay in the bottle longer and grow for as long as you want as long as you keep the water fresh</image:caption>

<image:caption>What sets us apart from other businesses in our field is growing plants on demand, delivering them to our customers, and participating in local farmers markets. Our industry has a bad habit of growing massive amounts of plants that become so overwhelming, they have to spray plant growth regulators to control their growth. This is misleading to their customers, because when they take their plant home, the plant growth regulator wares off allowing the plant to grow normally.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wandering Dude - Tradescntia zebrina 'Silver Plus' - The Tradescantia Genus is named after John Tradescant and his son of the same name who were botanists and gardeners to Charles the 1st of England. The genus name zebrina refers to the zebra stripped foliage appearance. As for its common name the nodes on the stem tend to be about 1 inch apart hence the name inch plant and it loves to crawl and trail thus the name wandering dude. Tradescantia zebrina is a great plant for an aspiring Greenthumbs as it is a very tough/hardy and easy to care for plant.</image:title>

You can try different things to help it flower but usually in non native climates they will not flower. Keeping it in the bright indirect light it prefers can encourage flowers to appear. Keeping your plant consistently moist is important as well as a mild application of fertilizer every month or so can also help to push flowers. <image:title>Wandering Dude - Tradescntia zebrina 'Silver Plus'</image:title>
<image:caption>Tradsescantias can usually handle heavy pruning. Pinching stems off the plant actually encourages bushier healthier growth. As your tradescantia gets bigger and the foliage on top starts to grown over the foliage on the underneath, the underneath foliage can start to break off, crisp up, or generally die off because its not recieving the light and airflow that the top foliage it getting. This is a good time to prune because if left to its own devices it will self prune and start to fall off from the underneath on its own. Sometimes they can also just become unruly, large, and heavy which can cause the pot to tip over if kept on a shelf or possibly make your hanging basket lean so pruning can be detrimental. When they are this large and heavy the weight of the plant itself can cause the weak stems to break off so don’t be surprised if this happens. This plant roots very easily in water or in soil and also breaks very easily at each node making it easily propagatable. But if the plant has dried down to the point of foliage dying off in large amounts you can trim the plant back to the base and most of the time it will rejuvenate itself if its not too far gone.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Common Names: Split-Leaf Philodendron, Cut-Leaf Philodendron Latin Name: Monstera deliciosa This beautiful vining hemi-epiphyte is an understorey plant that grows up trees in its natural environment. Although it may have similar characteristics its name can be very deceiving as it is not actually a Philodendron. Its large fenestrations or holes in the leaves allow for light to penetrate the plant and seep into the foliage below. As good-looking as it is it can be very poisonous if ingested and needs a lot of support in a houseplant environment to continue its growth. <image:title>Plants - Variegated Devils Backbone - Euphorbia tithymaloides - Quick Facts</image:title>
<image:caption>Common Names: Zig Zag Plant, Slipper Spurge, Jacobs Ladder Latin Name: Euphorbia tithymaloides Being from the diverse Euphorbia family Devils Backbone is no different. This somewhat succulent perennial offers a beautiful multitoned glossy foliage that steals the show and makes any location pop. Along with the foliage this plant has an amazing zig zag shaped stem that resembles a backbone hence the name. Its environmental requirements allow it to be used outside in a container or flower bed or indoors as a houseplant. With a little more intense light you can also achieve a nice pink to red coloration on the tips of the foliage. Although it is beautiful its milky sap or latex makes it toxic to humans and animals. If ingested it can cause irritation of the mouth and throat and possible vomiting. If it comes into contact with your skin it can cause irritation and possibly blisters. It is highly recommended to wear long sleeves, long pants, and even goggles if necessary to prevent contact with skin and eyes. <image:title>Plants - Dragon Wing Begonia - Begonia coccinea - Quick Facts</image:title>
<image:caption>Common Names: Angel Wing Begonia Latin Name: Begonia coccinea The Dragon Wing Begonia can make your home pop with its spotted leaves and makes for a great houseplant. It is a moderate care plant as they need some consistent care and attention. They prefer bright indirect light as direct light can scorch the foliage as well as a room with pretty high humidity to mimic its native environment. If you live in a hot and humid enough climate you can even plant these outside in the ground or in decorative containers. Even though this plant is gorgeous it can be toxic to pets and children as it has soluble calcium oxalates that can cause mouth irritation.
